If a tree falls in a forest
(Arduino, Processing, Unity, Illustrator, Premiere Pro)
if a tree falls in the forest and there is no one to tell the tale, did the tree fall?
“If a tree falls in a forest” is a series of media/interactive art that deals with the relationship between reality and stories.
The first piece regards the documentation aspect of stories. Stories bring events to life, making it so that the audience knows that such an event has happened. Without documention, an event practically did not happen. If a tree falls in a forest(1) is an app paired with a machine that records the amount of trees that have fallen. Every time a tree falls on the TV, an arduino ‘finger’ records such an even has happened.
The second piece talks about the reality-warping abilities of stories. An event does not even need to take place for a story to make the event reality. With documentation, an event did happen no matter the reality. If a tree falls in a forest(2) is an automated printer that prints “A tree has fallen” with no regard to the tree(event) inside the monitor. The machine randomly documents a tree falling, and the printer counts the times the “tree has fallen”.
The last piece gives the audience a choice. If a tree falls in a forest(3) is a big button that counts the number of trees that has fallen. After seeing the powers the stories have, the audience is given a choice: to record or to write. They can try and match the fallen tree numbers to reality, or try and write their own truth.
